Make Dirty Bass in Massive
When producers talk about dirty bass, Massive is the synth that’s mentioned the most. Liam O’Mullane shows you how to create an aggressive bass sound.

We first reviewed Massive early in 2007, and apart from a few tweaks with each update, the synth has essentially remained the same. This month we will show you how to make some obscene-sounding bass parts using Massive alone.
The term ‘dirty bass’ refers to bass lines that sound aggressive, with lots of discordant frequencies. These usually rely on a lot of modulation over time as well, which makes the bass part live and breathe. These bass lines aren’t exclusive to any one genre but are most often found in grime, dubstep, drum & bass and breaks. Their discordant overtones and engaging rhythms will take the front seat in the mix alongside the drum section, so it’s essential that the sound is strong enough to stand proud.
