Making It Better
Franz Ferdinand were determined that their second release would sound even better than their first, so they hired Rich Costey to produce it. Here he reveals to Petra Jones the techniques he used to realise their ambitions.
Brit Award-winners Franz Ferdinand were very determined that their follow-up album should be even more super fantastiche than their Mercury Prize-winning predecessor. With this in mind, Franz frontman Alex Kapranos purchased a secluded house just outside Glasgow as their studio. It was a conscious move back towards the environment in which the band got together, when they used to go to each other’s flats or hang out. It was here that the band and their newly hired producer Rich Costey spent the next two months living together and recording.
