Given the importance we place on mastering and its role in the production process, it’s always surprising when engineers seek to reduce this essential task to a ‘one-size-fits-all’ exercise. Although few of us will produce, compose or record music in exactly the same way, there seems to be a general trend to rationalise mastering down to a few key processes and techniques, augmented by a scattering of ‘magic’ plug-in settings.
