Why settle for simple plug-in presets when you can take real control over the process of mastering? Mark Cousins reveals some tricks of the trade...

Given the importance we place on mastering and its role in the production process, it’s always surprising when engineers seek to reduce this essential task to a ‘one-size-fits-all’ exercise. Although few of us will produce, compose or record music in exactly the same way, there seems to be a general trend to rationalise mastering down to a few key processes and techniques, augmented by a scattering of ‘magic’ plug-in settings.
