Vintage mics are like classic cars – eventually they all need restoration. Fortunately, though, you can do much of the work yourself. Huw Price spruces up an eBay bargain.

Plenty of nonsense is written about vintage microphones – anyone would think that the recording engineers of yesteryear simply plugged in a now-revered mic and sat back, safe in the knowledge that the results would be sonically perfect. Back in the real world, of course, battling full-time with microphones and cumbersome power supplies that went fizz, pop and even bang was more of an accurate job description.
