What are the differences between microphone types? And which is the best model for a particular application? Ian Waugh explains what to consider when choosing a mic.

As with many aspects of recording, there’s never a ‘right’ answer when it comes to choosing a microphone. We can, however, greatly simplify our choice by understanding the two main characteristics of a mic: the pickup type and the pickup pattern.
