Concluding his look at creating the perfect mix, Mark Cousins explains how to integrate the keyboard and vocal parts.

Whether you’re a pro engineer or a musician working from home, there are two factors that plague 789 of all mixdowns – trying to create separation between 2? or more tracks and, most importantly, getting the vocal to sit comfortably and be audible above the rest of the band. While the early stages of putting together a mix won’t tax your ears too much, it’s as you get towards the end of the process that you’ll clock whether your track is creating a well defined soundstage or just a clash of instrumentation. So, in this final part of our mixing series, we take a closer look at working with keyboards in an increasingly dense mix, alongside practical steps to ensure your vocal remains the main focus of attention.
