Creating a clear, defined and balanced mix is one of the hardest challenges that a recording musician or engineer will face. While tools such as compression, reverb and delay can certainly help along the way, there’s little doubt that the humble EQ unit – from the simple treble and bass controls on a basic mixer to the complexity and diversity of today’s software EQ – can be a useful tool to have to hand when trying to achieve a good mix. Get the timbre right with some effective equalisation and you’ll find that your mix assumes more energy, definition and separation, as well as replaying far more effectively in a range of listening environments. Indeed, what more could you want from your mixes?
