Despite living in a resolutely digital world, debate is still raging as to how and why analogue technology should be incorporated into the recording process. The consensus of opinion seems firmly fixed on retaining a high-quality analogue front end (like Class-A mic preamps, for example, or a valve compressor), but should that be the end of the story? More specifically, as we all increasingly rely on our DAWs for mixing as much as recording, many audio professionals have begun to question whether mixing ‘in the box’ really offers the level of audio perfection (more specifically, the separation, depth and width) we all seek, and whether an analogue signal chain on the output path of your DAW is just as vital as the route in.
