Has there ever been a worse time in which to try to make a living from music? Not if you listen to the record industry. According to figures just released by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI, the record companies’ trade body), illegal internet downloads have slashed expenditure on singles by 60 percent and on albums by 30 percent in the last year alone. And the main age group responsible is the under-19s, which hardly bodes well for the industry’s long-term health.
