Monitors and monitoring
Often considered the least important link in the production chain and even more frequently incorrectly mounted and positioned, monitors deserve much closer attention when setting up your studio, argues Dan Goldstein.
Of all the pieces of kit in the typical project studio, perhaps none is more misunderstood than monitors. Using the age-old maxim of ‘garbage in, garbage out’, many musicians feel that they should concentrate on the technology that creates, manipulates and processes sound, rather than the bit they actually listen to. And, since monitors don’t produce any sound of their own – and tend to look very much alike – it is tempting to think that your precise choice of loudspeaker doesn’t matter much.
