The digital audio workstation – or DAW – is at the heart of most modern studios. Musicians and producers often have a personal favourite, chosen perhaps because it suits their particular way of working or offers a better-implemented version of a particular feature than its rivals. But because learning your way around a DAW involves investing a lot of time and effort, the majority of people stick to using one or maybe two at most. Specialists such as engineers will have to be familiar with more than just a couple as they are expected to be able to adapt to working in different studio setups.
