As software assumes an ever-greater role in the pro audio world, so manufacturers are faced with a new problem: namely, the need to regulate the copying and distribution of their software products by introducing new forms of authorisation and licence management. A piece of hardware can’t be copied, so that doesn’t represent a problem from the manufacturer’s point of view. Software, on the other hand, can be easily duplicated as many times as you like. And although a CD has little value in itself, the development that’s gone into making the software and the resources required to support it imbue the disc with genuine worth. You’re not paying for the physical item, but for the program contained on it.
