Networking Your Studio

Given the current trend for 64-bit processing and Macs or PCs with dual or quad processors, it seems strange to think that you’d ever want to consider having more than one computer in your studio. But as we get more accustomed to what software-based recording can offer, there’s an increasing realisation that restricting yourself to just one ‘jack-of-all-trades’ computer might not be the best solution. Can you realistically expect a single Mac or PC to fulfil all your musical needs, and is it right to put the entirety of your studio (multitrack recorder, synthesizer, sampler, effects and dynamic processing) all inside one computer? As scary as it sounds, maybe it’s not a bigger and faster computer that your studio requires, just more of them!
