Optimise Windows for Pro Audio
If your audio PC hasn’t been set up by specialists, there are some simple steps you can take to streamline it yourself. Hollin Jones goes under the hood.

When you buy a music PC from a specialist company, its staff will generally tweak and fine-tune it before it reaches your studio to ensure it’s ready to meet the demands that pro audio work entails. Indeed, along with after-sales support, this is one of the main reasons for buying from a specialist audio PC builder. For many people, however, the PC they make music with is a standard or modified off-the-shelf model that has not been through a rigorous tuning process. And since working with digital audio and plug-ins is both processor-intensive and something of a balancing act when it comes to stability, it is a very good idea to take a few simple steps to optimise your Windows machine for music production. By doing so you can not only squeeze the maximum power from your hardware, but also extend its useful life.
