The vast majority of music features a drum track of one sort or another, and there are other ways of creating them apart from resorting to looped samples. Over this month and next, Nigel Lord explains how to get a different type of rhythm.
If you began your music-making activities any time in the last ten years and don’t work with a conventional drummer, the chances are you’ll be using loops as the basis of your drum tracks. Drum loops started life as a means of non-drummers (including DJs) being able to put together a basic rhythm track, taking advantage of the repetitive nature of rhythm itself to get a usable groove up and running in the minimum amount of time.
