Planning and creating your perfect studio. Part IV: Box Clever
In a world where computers are supposed to give you everything for very little, Hardware Digital Audio Workstations continue to fight their corner. Daniel Duffell explains why these dedicated boxes rightly remain the first choice for many.
Let’s begin this exploration of the world of Hardware Digital Audio Workstations (aka HDAWs) with some clarification. What we’re examining here is the combination of the following production tools within a single piece of dedicated hardware: multitrack recording, non-linear audio editing, effects processing, compression/gating, a mixing console/environment and CD-R. These tools can also all be provided by a computer-based system, and yet a great many users still choose the hardware option. Here we’re going to discuss the merits of HDAWs, how and why they compete with similarly equipped computer-based systems and how they can actually complement computers for audio and MIDI sequencing.
