Even in a world overflowing with plug-ins and virtual instruments, there are few software elements more useful and dependable than the software sampler. The chameleon of the studio, the sampler can slide effortlessly from mocking up a full-scale orchestral performance, to dicing and slicing the most extreme forms of electronica. Put simply, nothing rivals the versatility and practicality of the software sampler. However, the scope of what today’s sampler can achieve means it has grown to be something of a complicated beast: hungry for data, and with an almost endless amount of mapping and articulation options, synthesis parameters and a sound processing engine that puts some DAWs to shame.
