Hip hop is more dependent on beats than practically any other style of music. At its most basic it is just beats and rhythms, supplemented with a few hits or stabs. And no matter which of the many sub-genres of hip hop you listen to, rhythm is always the crucial component, and there are some fundamental similarities in the tempo and instrumentation of those rhythms.
