Creating your own beats rather than resorting to samples or presets is both rewarding and legal. Hollin Jones shows you how.

Hip hop is more dependent on beats than practically any other style of music. At its most basic it is just beats and rhythms, supplemented with a few hits or stabs. And no matter which of the many sub-genres of hip hop you listen to, rhythm is always the crucial component, and there are some fundamental similarities in the tempo and instrumentation of those rhythms.
