Protools 7.4 Workshop - Groups and Stems
Working with high track counts can rapidly lead to an unwieldy session, but Pro Tools offers ways of keeping things manageable. Mike Hillier shows you how.

In the course of recording and mixing a typical song, track counts can get quite high. However, Pro Tools 7 LE restricts you to just 32 tracks, although this number can be expanded to 48 if you purchase either the Music Production Toolkit or DV Toolkit 2. When running particularly large sessions, you can sometimes reach this limit quite quickly, forcing you to fi nd ways around it to complete your project. One way is to approach the mix in sections, bouncing down each section to a stereo stem and disabling tracks that aren’t in use to reduce the overall number. This is also a useful technique if you don’t have sufficient processing power to drive all of the tracks and effects you are likely to use.
