Reason 4 Workshop - Tempo and time signature automation
Adding speed and time signature changes to tracks can create interest for the listener – and now you can do it in Reason. Hollin Jones explains.

It took a while to finally arrive, but in Reason 4, users got a feature that they had been wanting for a long time: tempo and time signature automation – great tools for adding interest and depth to your compositions. Not necessarily to the sound of them, since sound isn’t really affected, but to the pacing, structure and form of tracks. There are many examples in which changing speed or time signature in the middle of a track can be useful. When scoring to picture, for example, you could write music to fit several, differently paced scenes and keep it in a single project. Similarly, if you were constructing a long mix containing several tracks that had to blend into one another but were at different speeds, you could automate tempo. This is the kind of thing that’s traditionally done by a DJ with decks, but you can have a fair stab at it now in Reason, too.

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP! My recent purchase of the MusicTech Focus REASON mag had no DVD in it. I live 25 miles from my nearest WH Smiths. Is there any chance that a disc could be sent to me or do I have to make a special trip to WHSmiths. The thing is, I shall not get to King's Lynn (place I bought the mag along with three others) for at least 10 days. The chance of them having a spare disc will be remote by then. Come on guys help a very frustrated reader out!!!
