Automation is one of the biggest benefits that using software to produce music has to offer. True, you can automate on some higher-end mixing desks and send MIDI program change messages to outboard hardware instruments and effects, but it’s all rather fiddly and doesn’t even approach the elegance and flexibility offered by software.
