Recording nu-metal guitar tracks
The wall-of-sound guitar effect is very popular in current nu-metal releases. Here Pete Crisp explains how to go about recording it.
It still remains a hotly debated issue as to just which bright spark it was who discovered that a guitar amp actually sounds rather nice when driven beyond its limits. The resulting cacophony of overdrive has become the staple of countless players over the years, and almost as many genres. The types of overdrive used has changed considerably as fashions have come and gone, but for the purposes of this month’s Guitar Tech we delve into guitar technology, we’re specifically interested in the grinding overtures that form the backbone of the nu-metal sound, a brand of mayhem that began life with the likes of Black Sabbath way back in the 70s.
