ReWiring Sonar 3 and Reason 2.5
Whether you’re looking for new sounds or syncing up an old jam, ReWiring your studio software can open up worlds of power on a single computer. Dave Hill Jr. explains how…
In our last Sonar 3 tutorial we learned how to take advantage of DXi plug-in instruments inside Sonar. We uncovered methods for using multiple outputs, sequencing tracks, automating parameters, and mixing the final output. But some sound applications don’t work as plug-ins, and this is for good reason (pun partially intended). Programs such as Propellerhead Reason, Arturia Storm, and Synapse Audio Orion are designed to function as standalone virtual studios, rather than being plugged into a host application. So there we were, each program living as a standalone host with no plug-in allowed visiting rights. Luckily, Propellerhead decided that, while plug-ins were too risky (in terms of stability), linking its software via an invisible software bridge would work just fine. Enter the ReWire studio, a technical achievement on a par with Steinberg’s VST plug-in and ASIO driver innovations.
