Ribbon Mic Technology
The first microphones that were able to record music accurately were the ribbons of the late 1920s. So why are they enjoying an explosion in popularity now, and what can they offer the modern recordist? Huw Price explores the ribbon renaissance…

Ribbon microphones are dynamic microphones, but unlike moving-coil dynamics – in which the diaphragm and conductor are separate components – the ribbon diaphragm is also the conductor. Since the foil diaphragm is extremely light and thin, it’s very responsive, and well-designed ribbon microphones can produce incomparably smooth and realistic recordings.
