Sculpture for beginners
Sculpture takes advantage of a new method of synthesis that promises exciting sound-design possibilities. Andrew Taylor-Maskrey digs in.
Most synths, whether real or virtual, usually employ some form of oscillator or sampled sound as their sound generator. Based on the physics of sound, we know which waveform to start with and by modifying the sound generator with envelopes, filters, LFOs and so on, we modulate and shape the oscillator(s) to get the required sound. Sometimes, results can be static, and even with the use of modulators can sound too regular or periodic. Filters are a great way of adding dynamism to a sound, but they too can sound a little tedious and predictable after a while.
