Sonar 4 Workshop Track Folders
Editing multi-mic’ed drums in Sonar used to be as hard as herding cats, but version 4’s Track Folders changed all that. Brian Smithers tries a new approach.
Splicing multitrack tape takes skill, experience and – most of all – a considerable amount of courage: you don’t want to mess up your master! The one thing you know for certain is that all of the tracks will maintain their relative positions, whether they’re correctly placed or not. The same can’t be said for multitrack editing using a DAW, however, as the tracks are not physically bound to one another. In this scenario, if you cut and paste a few notes from your top-mic’ed snare track and then try to match the edit with your bottom-mic’ed snare track, you’ll need to pinpoint the timing to ensure you don’t lose the phase relationship between the two.
