Sonar’s abilities extend far beyond the basics of project-studio recording – in fact, it’s more than capable of recording a full band. Brian Smithers goes tracking.

DAWs tend to be pigeonholed to reflect certain types of production work, and Sonar’s perceived niche seems to be small-studio, MIDI-oriented music creation. There’s no doubt that it shines in that role, but it’s more than capable of handling the sort of large-scale recording work usually regarded as the territory of a certain hardware-based DAW, and version 7 brought some new features that make the program’s already worthy tracking abilities worth revisiting.
