Designing sound and music for games requires a complex mix of skills. In addition to being able to create a wide variety of different sound effects, and compose beautiful and innovative musical scores, the designer needs to have a very firm grasp on the technical realities of game production – not to mention a demonstrable willingness to change everything at the drop of a hat. Here we’re going to take a look at where the sounds you hear in games come from, how they’re beaten into shape and how they’re integrated into the end product.
