Spectral Gate
Processing in the spectral domain can lead you to a whole new range of sounds and treatments. Mark Cousins finds out what’s possible with Spectral Gate.

Logic is packed with many weird and wonderful plug-ins, but none is as utterly perplexing and intriguing as the aptly named Spectral Gate. Is it some kind of advanced processor for cleaning up drum sounds, a means of creating space-age sound effects, or simply a super-charged filter? In truth, Spectral Gate belongs to a group of plug-ins (which includes Native Instruments’ Spektral Delay and iZotope’s Spectron) that process sound in the spectral domain – in other words, splitting sound into thousands of separate frequency bands and applying different processes to minute groups of frequencies. Spectral Gate might not be for the faint-hearted, but it is a fascinating insight into an entirely different way of processing sound.
