Stephen Stills & Manassas - It Doesn't Matter
JoE Silva gets the lowdown on Stephen Stills’ greatest moment post Crosby and Nash.
Not content to shoehorn all his talent within the supernova that was Crosby, Stills and Nash, Stephen Stills scored major chart hits on his own. Prompted into checking out Miami’s historic Criteria studios by his label mentor Ahmet Ertegun in 1971, Stills later took up residence there to record what was to be his third solo album. It was during these sessions that Manassas was born. A supergroup for veterans of supergroups, the sprawling ensemble contained former members of not only CSNY, but the Byrds (Chris Hillman), and the Flying Burrito Brothers, too. Since Stills maintained an open-door policy when it came to guest musicians, engineers Howard and Ron Albert had to exercise a lot of flexibility while the tracks were being laid down.
