Ever since music was first recorded, producers have been required to understand not only music itself, but also the techniques and equipment needed to create a great end product. In these technologically advanced times, we have an incredible selection of tools available to us, but they bring their own potential pitfalls and problems. Even a modest studio will involve some combination of computer or hard disk recorder, MIDI hardware, plug-in instruments and effects, mics, speakers and amps. And with the rise of the internet comes the expectation that you should be able to release music yourself, so issues such as mixing and mastering have become much more important for many people.
