Ten Minute Master 136 - Headphone Monitoring
Creating an effective headphone mix can make a big difference to the quality of the performances you manage to capture. Mark Cousins takes his cue.

Beyond the essentials of your signal path, a proper headphone monitoring system is one of the ‘make-or-break’ components of an effective recording setup. Put simply, when an artist is presented with a well-balanced headphone mix (or cue mix), they’ll have a much better chance of performing to the best of their ability. Provide them with an incoherent headphone mix, however, and they’ll struggle to find continuity between takes, drift out of tune with other instruments or, worse still, have no idea how their performance relates to the rest of the song.
