Ten Minute Master: Audio Metering
From FFT spectrum analysis to stereo vectorscopes, the way that we visualise audio is crucial to successful recording. Mark Cousins watches his meters.

Like many components of the modern-day studio, audio metering has seen some significant improvements since being embedded as part of the ubiquitous DAW. Whereas engineers in the 60s and 70s might have struggled to work with a single VU meter strapped across the console’s meter bridge, engineers now have a plethora of tools at their disposal to help them visualise the integrity of an audio signal, whether it’s pin-sharp peak meters, FFT analysis or a stereo vectorscope. However, although we’re surround by all these different meters, it isn’t always the case that we can interpret the information they’re presenting to us.
