We are all well aware that music technology is an ever-changing arena, but making the jump from stereo to surround sound is perhaps the biggest change we’ll see for a long time. Already the humble CD is dwarfed by the storage capacity and quality of DVD, which of course brings us the added feature of high-quality, multi-channel sound. With this in mind, we can expect surround sound to stick around. The surround format we know as 5.1 is accepted as a ‘common format’; nearly all domestic home cinema setups use it, as do cinemas with Dolby Digital systems; and it’s also the standard format for digital television. 5.1 mixes are also versatile enough to ‘convert’ into other formats such as stereo, quad and Pro-Logic Dolby Surround.
