Remixing plays a crucial role in today’s music. In this beginner’s guide, Liam O’Mullane explains how to start putting your own stamp on someone else’s work.

You can sum up remixing as being the process of adapting or re-imagining a track, based around the existing musical material. The amount of the original material you use and how far from the original your version might be can vary immensely. At one end of the scale, a remix may be a slightly altered version of a track, built to work better in a different scenario – a mainstream club mix of a pop tune, for instance. At the other extreme, a remix may be a complete transformation, such as an acoustic, vocal-led song being remixed as a pounding techno cut.
