There are few instruments that can boast such a rich and long heritage in electronic music as the Hammond Organ. From the birth of electronic music – with Thaddeus Cahill’s invention of the telharmonium – through to today’s virtual emulations, the principles and sound behind the Hammond’s distinctive tonewheel sound-generation system have remained at the heart of music production. Genres such as gospel, rock, R‘n’B, jazz and house have all made extensive use of the Hammond sound, and, thanks to emulations like Native Instrument’s B4 II and Hammond’s own XK-3, it’s an instrument that a new generation of musicians has access to.
