The new music business - Music and the internet Part One
Online music marketing is booming as more musicians realise that they don’t actually need a recording contract any more. In the first of a three-part series, Keith Gemmell explains how the internet is starting a revolution in music sales.
There’s no doubt about it, online music sales are suddenly booming. Since Apple opened its iTunes Music Store, online sales have gone through the roof. In just one year it has sold an incredible 100 million songs. To begin with the service was available only in the US, but in the last few months Apple has also opened iTunes stores across Europe. Log on to the iTunes Music Store and you’ll find a selection of approximately 700,000 tracks to download from the world’s five major record labels. With individual tracks costing just 79p, it’s no wonder the company has enjoyed such success – and, of course, they’re delivered directly to your computer as MP3 files.
