Audiophile purists might shudder at the thought, but for most musicians and engineers the use of compression appears to be an almost endless love affair. From the beginnings of the production process right through to the finished masters, modern music pumps and squeezes its way through the airwaves to demand our attention – indeed, it’s difficult to conceive popular music, radio, TV and film without the characteristic intensity compression delivers. Acheiving such an exciting sound, however, isn’t a simple one-stop shop (just putting the mix through a TC Finalizer and press Wizard, for example), but instead involves a variety of processors and techniques throughout the duration of a recording.
