Think of trip hop and a few names spring to mind: Portishead, Lamb, Morcheeba and others, all occupying different streams within the genre, from dark and brooding to upbeat and melodic. The term itself isn’t favoured by every band to which it’s applied and truthfully, these days ‘trip hop’ is an umbrella term that’s often used to group together a very diverse range of bands and artists. Perhaps most interestingly, many of the characteristics it embodies are now used heavily in film and TV soundtracks – it was, after all, defined at least in part by the ‘cinematic’ nature of its sound.
