Arguably one of the most significant developments of the DAW explosion has been in the rise of the plug-in – those small but important pieces of code that can help transform a collection of audio files into a finished mix, all without a single piece of dedicated hardware in sight. Compared to the days when a typical studio’s outboard rack would contain no more than ten or so essential devices, today’s plug-in folder can contain potentially hundreds of different audio processors, from simple compressors and equalizers right through to the latest psychoacoustic mix enhancers, delay units and much more.
