Ultimate Studio Tips
Making the most of your studio time means knowing more than just your way around an instrument. Hollin Jones offers pro tips and tricks to maximise your productivity.

Music producers today have to be more skilled in more areas than at any time in history. A bold statement, you may think, but look at the evidence. Not so long ago, musicians, engineers and producers were often separate groups of people. A
guitarist might be a brilliant player, but probably had little knowledge of how to wire up a patchbay. An engineer might have been an expert on recording, but had only the most basic musical skills when it came to playing. This is a generalisation, of course, but a fairly accurate one. The main reason for such separation of roles was that recording equipment was big, expensive and not available to the man in the street. A player or a band went to a studio to be recorded by a professional.
