Vector Synthesis with Logic Pro 6’s ES2
The ES2 packs some powerful punches, the best of these being vector synthesis. Mark Cousins takes a look at the ultimate modulation tool.
Vector synthesis first appeared as part of Sequential Circuits’ first (and last) great digital synthesizer – the Prophet VS. With the demise of Sequential, the design team, including Dave Smith, took their pioneering ideas to Korg and Yamaha to help create the Wavestation and SY22, both of which featured vector controls and waveshapes borrowed from the VS. Key to the concept of vector synthesis is the dynamic morphing of up to four oscillators, often using a joystick controller. The sound of vector synthesis is the sound of movement – oscillators glide into each other in a far more exciting way than conventional ADSR-based synthesizers.
