Music publishing on the internet is the best thing that’s happened to music distribution since the birth of vinyl – unless, of course, you’re a record company executive, or the artist whose work is being ripped off. The huge cultural changes wrought by the internet have meant that many people – particularly those under the age of 20 – have come to expect (and can normally get) their music for free. And for some musicians and composers, the freedom of the internet and the ability to reach out to millions of potential fans for very little outlay is hugely attractive.
