Mixing in 5.1
With an increasing number of professional engineers and recording musicians now working in 5.1 surround sound format, we take a closer look at some of the  latest techniques and practices of surround mixing. Mark Cousins has the lowdown…

Mic Restoration and Modification
Vintage mics are like classic cars – eventually they all need restoration. Fortunately, though, you can do much of the work yourself. Huw Price spruces up an eBay bargain.

Ten Minute Masters
Parallel compression offers an innovative and unique way of controlling dynamic range. We explore the hard facts behind this intriguing trend… Plus! Impedance is a term you’ll inevitably come across if you regularly deal with any kind of studio equipment. Grant Bridgeman explains why resistance is not always futile…

Reviews
Novation’s XioSynth, Digidesign’s Mbox 2 Pro, KRK Systems' V6, Wave Arts' Power Suite 5, Mackie’s Onyx Satellite and Apple’s Intel-powered MacBook Pro are just some of the new products coming under the microscope this month.

ON THE DVD

Synth Bass
This collection of synth bass samples demonstrates perfectly how technology has broadened the role of traditional instruments. It’s now feasible, for example, to sustain bass notes well beyond what’s possible with an acoustic bass, enabling bass lines to contribute atmosphere and texture as well as rhythm and harmony. Find out for yourself with these exclusive synth bass samples.

Fizmo Fantasy
Ensoniq’s Fizmo was the last synth to leave the company’s production line before the brand passed into the history books in 1998. Its unique sound came from its use of waveforms known as Transwaves – a series of short modulated loops that produced lots of movement. The Fizmo had eight oscillators per voice and three separate effects units, each with 41 different algorithms. The individual letters of its name related to five realtime
control knobs located above the keyboard, which enabled the player to further modulate the waves at will, creating the evolving sounds that distinguished this synth despite its subsequent demise. This collection of exclusive Fizmo samples have been recorded through a Great River MP-2NV preamp into a Pro Tools | HD system to perfectly capture the essence of a truly maverick synth.

Ableton Live 6 Demo
Ableton’s Live has carved itself something of a niche in the software sequencing world. Geared specifically towards performing computer musicians, this latest version sees Ableton taking Live a step further, incorporating tools for music-to-picture tasks, multiprocessor support and a wealth of new devices and effects.

Sole UK Wave Arts distributor Sonic8 is offering Music Tech readers an exclusive 20% discount off the full boxed version of Wave Arts Power Suite 5, reviewed in this issue on page 77.
