Neve 2254/R Limiter/compressor
40 years on from the original 2254, is Neve’s latest reissue the studio must-have it once was? Mark Cousins finds out.
Manufacturer: Neve
Website: http://www.ams-neve.com

When the original Neve 2254 Limiter/ Compressor was released 40 years ago, few could have predicted the long-term popularity of this distinctive gain control device. Indeed, many of the original 2254s from the early 70s are still in daily service in studios around the world, and on the rare occasion that a second-hand unit appears on eBay, you can guarantee it will change hands for a significant sum of money. Given the success of Neve’s other vintage reissues, therefore – including the 1073 and 1081 mic preamps – many would argue that a contemporary version of its classic mono compressor was well overdue.
