Not so long ago, a 24-track tape machine was one of the most significant and expensive investments a studio could make. Having 24 tracks to play with meant you were one of the big boys – several leagues ahead of the Portastudio enthusiasts struggling on 4-track cassette-based systems, and suitably more geared up than smaller facilities which could stretch to only 8- or 16-track recordings. Nowadays, of course, recording facilities have changed significantly – both for professional studios and home recordists alike – and thanks to devices such as Tascam’s original 2488, almost anyone can gain access to the wonders of 24-track recording.
