The origins of the Danish microphone company DPA date back to the early 1940s, when two young engineers – Per V Brüel and Viggo Kjær – got together to form a new company called Brüel & Kjær (aka B&K). The two men came from an academic background and they were primarily interested in acoustic measurement and calibration technology. The company eventually won a contract to produce its 4160 calibration microphone to replace the various Western Electric designs that had been used in US laboratories throughout the 1940s.
