However much software currently dominates in the studio, there are still some jobs which can only really be done with hardware – both during recording and, even more importantly, on-stage. Matching levels, altering and processing sound in various ways and dealing with the demands of speaker and amplification systems will always dictate a need for certain types of ‘black box’, and these are constantly being improved, updated, and made more affordable.
