AKAI MPK25
The latest MPK controller keyboard shrinks the format to two octaves. Mike Hillier finds out if it still packs a punch.

AKAI has a reputation for developing creative tools – indeed, despite being up to 25 years old, the company’s hardware samplers are still being used by musicians today. The MPC in particular helped to define the sound of early hip hop, with its grid of velocity-sensitive pads becoming a staple means for triggering samples and still featuring on many AKAI products to this day, including the cutting-edge APC40, the MPC5000, MPD18 and MPK49. The MPK25 follows hot on the heels of the MPK49 (reviewed in Issue 59) and shares many of the same features as the older model.
