Rob Papen Albino VSTi Synthesizer
Arm a synth with presets created by a leading sound designer and factors like programmability pale into insignificance. But, as Nigel Lord discovers, there’s nothing pale about Albino…

Ever since the mid-80s, when memory began to be routinely included on hi-tech gear, synth players have been berated for treating sophisticated instruments as little more than preset devices. The art of synth programming was dying, we were told, because nobody could be bothered to create their own sounds and instead spent hours combing through the banks of presets loaded in at the factory. No one ever seemed to question the manufacturers’ policy of including increasing numbers of presets on their machines – and, in some cases, even filling the user presets with sounds rather than send them out into the big, wide world with empty memories.
